As the Vice President of Development Operations for Upbring, Mary Katherine Matalon is responsible for fundraising, events, major gifts and grant writing, as well as stewarding relationship with donors, volunteers and corporate partners. She also oversees Upbring's Lubbock community programs, Neighborhood House and Health for Friends Clinic. Mary Katherine joined Upbring as a grant writer in 2015. In the fall of 2017, she became the Manager of Foundation Relations, then the Director of Grants and Foundation Relations, before assuming her current role in 2021.
In those roles, Mary Katherine has raised over $1 million for Upbring annually, managed a portfolio with an average of 16 foundations and supervised a team responsible for submitting about 40 grants to foundations and government agencies each year.
Mary Katherine’s past professional experience includes serving as the Director of Foundation Relations for the College of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Austin, where she was responsible for securing over $1 million in foundation funding annually. She also served as the Grants Manager at The Contemporary Austin.
Mary Katherine earned her Master of Arts from The Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College and her Bachelor of Arts from Smith College. She served as a member of the vestry of St. James Episcopal Church from 2017 to 2020, as well as the chair of the church’s Finance Committee from 2019 to 2020. Outside of work, Mary Katherine enjoys spending time with family and friends, running in her Austin neighborhood and viewing art.
