As the Vice President of Development Operations for Upbring, Mary Katherine Matalon is responsible for fundraising, events and grant writing, as well as donor, volunteer and corporate relationships. Mary Katherine joined Upbring as a grant writer in 2015. In the fall of 2017, she became the Manager of Foundation Relations, then the Director of Grants and Foundation Relations, before assuming her current role as Vice President of Development Operations in 2021.

In those roles, Mary Katherine has annually raised over $1 million dollars for Upbring, managed a portfolio with an average of 16 foundations and supervised two fulltime staff members who have annually submitted 40 grants to foundations and government agencies. Throughout her tenure at Upbring, Mary Katherine has been a role model in the organization, consistently demonstrating servant leadership in all pursuits.

During her professional career, she has worked in grant writing and foundation relations for almost a decade. Mary Katherine previously served as the Director of Foundations Relations for the College of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Austin, where she was responsible for securing over $1 million in foundation funding annually. She also served as the Grants Manager at The Contemporary Austin. 

Mary Katherine earned her Master of Arts from The Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College and her Bachelor of Arts from Smith College. She has served as a member of the vestry of St. James Episcopal Church from 2017 to 2020, as well as the chair of the church’s Finance Committee from 2019 to 2020. Outside of the office, Mary Katherine enjoys spending time with family and friends, running in her Austin neighborhood, and seeing art.
